Inspiration
The latest inspiration came from hearing salon personnel say that brides are looking for a change in necklines. So after doing my research regarding the various styles of necklines, I found one that appealed to me. From this one style, I created 4 styles that would compliment each other (see example 1 below).
Creating the pattern and sample
Several sketches were created to depict the different styles chosen. These were then evaluated for pattern construction. A 'master' pattern is made and then a 'designer' pattern is created from it for each of the different styles. To see exactly how the garments will be constructed, a 'muslin' sample is made. This will also show how the designs look when made up in fabric and show any changes that are needed. All through these first 2 processes color and fabric choice has been considered. After the sample is made the fabric is purchased (see example 2, 3, and 4).
Final creation
Here is the final product. This is the sample done as a short day/cocktail dress. This required less fabric and labor than the bridal and evening styles. This is fine since each of the other styles are based on this one (see photo 5 and 6).
Reading this here it may seem like a simple process but it takes quite a bit of patience to wait for inspiration to come and can be frustrating when the pieces don't seem to fit. But in the end beautiful garments are made and that makes it all worth the effort.
Be sure to check back. In a few weeks (around the Summer) I will have photos of the new 2009 collection. Remember the fabric and color you see can be changed to your taste.
